The teaching of music develops pupils' ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgments about musical quality. It encourages active involvement in different forms of music making, both individual and communal, developing a sense of group identity and togetherness.
Children have the opportunity to join the Recorder Club, Band, Diosing or Glee Club. St. Bartholomew's is currently visited by peripatetic teachers in flute, clarinet, violin, guitar, piano, percussion and keyboard. Children have the opportunity to take external exams. Many children participate in the Music in May concert which celebrates musical achievements of children within the school.
All Year 4 children have the opportunity to learn to play a woodwind instrument free for one year, under the Leicester-Shire Arts in Education Wider Opportunities Fund. They may continue to learn to play this instrument at very reasonable rates the following year, and many choose to do so.
During each year, children are encouraged to participate in concerts combining music and drama. Parents are invited to watch the children's performances.
