Creative Arts

Here at St. Bartholomew’s, we promote a programme of study within Art, Design and Technology that allows the children to express their individual imagination, take risks and become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. This is achieved through a progressive, skills-based approach, based upon the National Curriculum.

Purpose of study – National Curriculum (NC), 2014

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

National curriculum in England: art and design programmes of study - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Our school is committed to nurturing pupils’ curiosity and creativity, as well as preparing them for living in a modern world where technology is rapidly changing and advancing. The local area and outdoor environment that we have here at St. Bart’s provides stimulus for the children to express themselves. We work closely with the local community and have been involved with brightening up our village with the children’s artwork too.

We provide the opportunity for the children to apply their skills by creating unique pieces of artwork or fulfilling a design brief meeting the D&T principles. All of the skills and techniques that we teach are inspired by well-known artists or designers, their style and their contribution to the development of Art, Design and Technology. We learn about these influential people and how they can help us to review and improve our own skillset.
