Special Needs Education at St Bartholomew’s

At St. Bart’s, our SEND philosophy is embedded in our Mission Statement. This is based around providing the children with a high quality, nurturing and inclusive learning environment that allows the children to grow as individuals, achieving their personal goals. As part of our focus upon providing an inclusive education, we have a support system in place for children with additional needs. This is based around communication between our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENDCo), parents and teachers. This allows us to fully support the needs of all children at school and there is also opportunity for parents to support at home too.

The term “Special Educational Needs” has a legal definition.

“A child or young person has Special Educational Needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special education provision to be made for him or her. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:

  • Has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age or,
  • Has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her of making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post 16 institutions.

For children aged 2 or more, Special Educational Needs provision is educational or training provision that is additional to or different from that made generally for other children or young people of the same age.” For some children, SEND can be identified at an early age. However, for other children and young people, difficulties become evident as they grow and develop.

Progress is not solely related to academic attainment. A child’s social and emotional development is paramount to a child achieving their potential.

If you have any questions about our SEND provision, please talk to the class teacher or to the SENDCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator).

If you would like more detailed information about how we identify and support pupils with special educational needs, please see our SEND policy.  The policy is the school's contribution to the Local Offer.
